Community reports from r/galaxyzfold document fold-crease dead pixels on Z Fold 4 units — particularly on phones used intensively for more than a year. The fold crease accumulates stress with every open/close cycle. Dead pixels at the crease typically appear as small black voids on white or bright colour backgrounds.

Warranty status for Z Fold 4 (launched August 2022):

  • Standard 1-year warranty expired for most units (unless purchased late 2022 or with extended warranty)
  • Samsung Care+ may still be active — check the Samsung Members app for your coverage status
  • Out-of-warranty inner screen replacement: approximately $479

Testing the Z Fold 4

  1. Open the phone fully. Dial *#0*# in the Phone app to open Samsung's display diagnostic.
  2. Test each colour. Inspect the fold crease closely — view from different angles since the crease area can reflect light differently.
  3. Fold the phone and run this browser test on the outer cover display.
  4. Compare results week-over-week if you suspect the dead pixel area is growing — document with photos each time.

Should You Repair or Trade In a Z Fold 4 with Dead Pixels?

With the Z Fold 4 now 3+ years old, the economics need careful evaluation:

  • Inner screen repair (~$479) vs. Z Fold 4 trade-in value ($200–$400 depending on condition) — repair rarely makes sense financially
  • If the dead pixel is small and in the crease area, it may be liveable while you wait for an upgrade cycle
