Galaxy Fold Dead Pixel — Historical Context

The original Galaxy Fold launched in September 2019 after a high-profile recall for display failures. Samsung redesigned the hinge and added protective layers before re-release. Despite these fixes, the Fold's first-generation display remains more vulnerable to dead pixels than later Z Fold models:

  • Inner display: 7.3" Dynamic AMOLED — no Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), which was introduced on the Z Fold 2
  • The protective film layer on the inner display was a known issue — removing it causes immediate dead pixels
  • Hinge gap allows debris to enter and damage the display layer
  • Fold crease dead pixels are more common on original Fold than on later Z Fold models

Galaxy Fold Dead Pixel — Warranty Status

The Galaxy Fold launched in 2019 — all units are more than 5 years outside their standard warranty. Samsung Care+ for original Fold units is also expired. Options at this stage:

  • Third-party foldable screen repair — specialised shops only; standard repair shops typically do not carry original Fold inner panels
  • Samsung may offer out-of-warranty repair via Samsung Service Centers, but parts availability for the original Fold is increasingly limited
  • Trade-in: a Galaxy Fold with dead pixels has low but nonzero trade-in value — some carriers and third-party buyback services accept it as-is for parts
  • Screen replacement cost (if parts available): $300–$500 depending on the repair shop and region

Testing the Original Galaxy Fold

  1. Open the phone fully. Dial *#0*# to open the diagnostic display test.
  2. Test each solid colour. The fold crease on the original Fold is more pronounced than on later models — inspect this area closely.
  3. Do NOT attempt to remove or lift the inner display protective film — it is not a screen protector and removing it destroys the display.
  4. Test the outer cover display separately using this browser test with the phone folded closed.
